Seattle Times and Newsday are the latest publications to sue OpenAI and Microsoft

Two major news organizations, The Seattle Times and Newsday, have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft. The suit argues that using copyrighted journalism to train generative AI models like ChatGPT could "break" the journalism industry beyond repair, describing AI as a "rapacious consumer" that devours content to produce derivatives. This follows a similar 2023 lawsuit by The New York Times. Notably, Microsoft and OpenAI have previously funded some of The Seattle Times' journalism projects, adding complexity to the case. Microsoft expressed surprise at the lawsuit but indicated a willingness to discuss solutions.
