Seattle Times and Newsday sue OpenAI and Microsoft for infringement

The Seattle Times and Newsday have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement. The two news organizations allege that OpenAI used their journalism without permission to train its AI models, which sometimes reproduce passages from their reporting in response to user queries. Microsoft is also named as a defendant because its Copilot product is built on OpenAI's technology. This case is part of a broader wave of litigation, following similar lawsuits from major publishers like The New York Times and joining efforts by nearly 400 local newspapers. The plaintiffs are seeking the destruction of any copies of their works held by the companies, as well as the training datasets and AI models that incorporate them, arguing that the AI tools reduce website visits and subscription revenue.
