1Password increases engineering productivity 21% with Codex

1Password has integrated OpenAI's Codex AI tool across its entire software delivery lifecycle, from planning to production. This has enabled the company to accelerate feature development, with engineers able to go from an idea to a working prototype in a single step. The implementation has resulted in a 20.9% productivity improvement for engineers and a 10.9% reduction in median pull request cycle time. Specific benefits include faster code integration, quicker investigation of complex defects across microservices, and the rapid creation of internal tools like an AI design system and reliability agent. 1Password maintains its strict zero-knowledge security model by using secret references instead of credentials, ensuring no tradeoff between speed and data protection. Based on the measured improvements, the company estimates an annual engineering capacity value of $783,750 for a cohort of 50 developers, with a 553% ROI. Following engineering's success, 1Password is expanding access to Codex to other departments like finance and marketing. The CTO, Nancy Wang, sees this as part of a broader trend towards "democratized building," where roles beyond engineering become comfortable with AI tools to ship code.
