These commitments include pledges not to train AI models on student or educator data, limiting data collection, providing plain-language disclosures about how its tools work, prohibiting AI companions, and requiring human review for high-risk decisions. The agreement follows one-year bans on AI tools for students implemented by the New York City and Los Angeles school districts, giving them time to establish proper guardrails. AFT President Randi Weingarten emphasized the terms are "iron-clad" and necessary because "no one else, including the federal government, has stepped up to do the real work." Starting in November, school districts can add these terms to existing contracts without full renegotiation.
