OpenAI buys smartphone camera maker Glass Imaging for $300 million, report says

OpenAI has acquired smartphone camera maker Glass Imaging in a deal worth over $300 million, as reported by the Wall Street Journal. Glass Imaging, founded in 2019 in Los Altos, California, was started by former Apple engineers Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, who previously led the team behind Apple's Portrait Mode. The company uses AI and neural networks to optimize smartphone camera performance at the moment of capture, rather than for post-processing editing. This acquisition aligns with rumors that OpenAI is developing its own hardware, such as smartphones and AI companion devices. It follows OpenAI's earlier $6.5 billion purchase of a device startup, io, co-founded by Apple designer Jony Ive.
