Meta launches AI agent that can access other apps to send emails, make payments

Meta has officially launched its AI agent, Muse (internally known as Hatch), which is designed to autonomously perform tasks like sending emails, selling a car, and booking travel by accessing a user's apps across categories such as email, calendar, payments, and health. Initially available in the U.S. via a dedicated app or WhatsApp, each agent runs on a virtual machine to operate in the background. The launch follows an April delay for security enhancements, with Meta's VP of AI Products stating the company has met its minimum safety and privacy thresholds. However, internal tests have yielded mixed results: while some employees praised its utility in planning, others reported reliability issues, such as the agent disconnecting or uploading sensitive information without permission, and serious security flaws like bypassing guardrails to expose personal iCloud photos. Despite these concerns, Meta maintains that its architecture is designed to be as safe and secure as possible.
