Google will now let any AI agent run your smart home

Google has announced Google Home MCP, a new integration that enables third-party AI agents, such as Claude and Open Claw, to securely access and control devices within the Google Home ecosystem using the standardized Model Context Protocol. This allows agents to analyze device event history for insights, perform cross-device analysis, and interact with users via voice. The feature is distinct from Google's own Gemini for Home assistant. At launch, it is available only to Google Home Premium Advanced subscribers in the US, requiring a Google Cloud project for setup. Google emphasizes security safeguards, like preventing agents from unlocking doors, but acknowledges potential for unexpected behavior. The move is part of Google's strategy to establish itself as the core infrastructure layer for the smart home, similar to AWS for web services, though developer trust in Google's platform commitment remains a question given its history.
