The FAA’s plan to fix air traffic? $875 million worth of AI

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is addressing a nationwide air traffic control shortage by launching a $875 million AI software program named Smart (Strategic Management of Airspace, Routes and Trajectories). Developed by Air Space Intelligence, Smart is a cloud-based platform that uses AI to predict traffic flows and identify conflicts by assessing factors like schedules, weather, and airspace conditions. It will initially roll out in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area before expanding to other regions. This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize aging air traffic systems, alongside new hiring plans to erase staffing shortages.
