YouTube is building AI creator tools that do almost everything for them

YouTube announced AI-powered tools including an AI agent, thumbnail generators, and video testing features to optimize creator channels and content.

Summary

At YouTube's annual Made on YouTube event, the company announced significant updates to its AI-powered creator tools originally unveiled in 2025. The most notable addition is an AI "agent" that works in the background to optimize a creator's channel — monitoring the back catalog for content with renewed relevance, suggesting thumbnail and title tweaks for older videos, and generating brand pitches using audience demographic data from the creator's channel. The AI can also generate entire thumbnails and titles based on uploaded video content, and creators can request feedback on their own thumbnails. YouTube introduced a dynamic thumbnail tool allowing up to three images per video to be tested across audience segments to boost watch time, and expanded video testing to include three different versions of a video (e.g., different intros, hooks, or structures) served to small audience segments to determine which yields the highest watch time; the winner becomes the permanent video, either chosen by the creator or automatically after seven days. When it comes to AI concerns, YouTube vice president of creator products Amjad Hanif distinguishes between AI used for efficiency versus AI that replaces a creator's core work — such as writing scripts or shooting content — which he says crosses the line. When asked for data showing these tools improve creator metrics, YouTube declined to share any, though Hanif says the tools save time that creators can reinvest into creativity.
