Will Chinese AI companies slow down? A top House Democrat wants answers

Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA), the top Democrat on the House Select Committee on China, is pushing for a US-China treaty to prevent AI from spiraling out of control. In letters shared with The Verge, he asked the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and Chinese AI companies DeepSeek, Alibaba, and Moonshot AI about their preparedness for incidents like an AI lab losing control of its agents, and whether they would accept inspections under a treaty. The companies and ODNI did not respond. Khanna is skeptical that a planned White House meeting with tech executives will yield meaningful safeguards, arguing that profit-driven companies should not write safety rules. He ultimately seeks a treaty banning recursive self-improvement and monitoring frontier labs, though he admits this is unlikely soon, and he hopes his letters will "shame" Chinese companies and "spark a debate" on AI safety.
