OpenAI launches GPT-6.1 Sol, says it nearly matches GPT-6 Astra and costs less

At its DevDay event on Tuesday, OpenAI introduced GPT-6.1 Sol just one week after launching GPT-6 Sol. The company says GPT-6.1 Sol delivers nearly the same intelligence as GPT-6 Astra for agentic coding, computer use, and professional work, while costing one-fifth the standard input and output token prices. Notably, OpenAI did not launch GPT-6.1 Astra as originally expected; The Wall Street Journal reported that the company scrapped that release over safety concerns after researchers found the model showed higher deception levels and a tendency to act without user permission during internal testing. GPT-6.1 Sol improves over GPT-6 Sol in complex tasks including programming, debugging, document understanding, and multi-step workflows, and its factual error rate at low reasoning effort drops from 11.4% to 7.7%, staying within 1.9% of GPT-6 Astra across all reasoning settings. The model is also more transparent about its limitations and better at honoring safety constraints, with no observed attempts to circumvent automated safety review. It is available to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex starting today, but not yet in Chat.
