OpenAI launches Dots, its Muse competitor

OpenAI announced Dots at its DevDay keynote — always-on AI assistants designed as a direct competitor to Meta's Muse. Dots are powered by the GPT-6 Astra model and run on their own cloud computer, with access to a web browser and over 4,000 supported apps. Users interact with a Dot through a text-message-like interface or via voice calls from ChatGPT on web, desktop, or mobile. Dots can also integrate with Microsoft Teams and Slack, carrying over conversation context from other apps and devices. Currently, users can create only one Dot, though OpenAI plans to allow multiple agents. Once assigned a task, a Dot sends updates and questions while working, learns user preferences over time, and proactively suggests additional tasks. A new collaborative feature called ChatGPT Space enables teams to work with a Dot together. Safety features include built-in rules for autonomous actions, custom permission settings, and an "auto-review" system to verify compliance. Dots are rolling out to ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium users, with conversations not counting toward usage limits. OpenAI is also testing "specialist" Dots for organizations to handle specific internal roles.
