The AI Tamagotchis are coming

Meta and OpenAI are planning to launch physical AI hardware devices, betting that users will want tangible forms for AI agents. OpenAI is working with designer Jony Ive on a device expected no earlier than February 2027, and has introduced the Dots agent platform. Meta is preparing the Muse Charm, a pendant-like device with a Tamagotchi-style screen showing the Muse AI agent, aiming for release before the holiday season. Both companies are soft-launching their AI agents in software first to familiarize users, hoping that emotional attachment will drive demand for hardware. This strategy contrasts with previous failed AI gadgets like the Humane AI Pin, which faced backlash.
