Google announces Gemini 4 and says it’s so capable that only ‘trusted cyber defenders’ can have it right now

Google has announced its next AI frontier model, Gemini 4 Argon, claiming frontier performance across real-world software engineering, enterprise knowledge work, and cybersecurity defense. The company is initially limiting access to "trusted cyber defenders" and is actively engaged in the U.S. government’s voluntary pre-release model access process. The model is already powering Google’s internal workflows, including large-scale codebase migrations, and benchmarks show it outperforming competing models from OpenAI and Anthropic. The launch comes just one day after OpenAI’s DevDay conference, where OpenAI launched its Dots AI agent and GPT-6.1 Sol AI model, and shortly after Koray Kavukcuoglu was appointed as the new boss of DeepMind in August. Google plans to strengthen critical frontier safeguards, including defending against misuse, prompt injection attacks, and monitoring for misalignment, before a broader rollout.
