Uber puts all 30,000 employees on ChatGPT Work
Summary
Uber and OpenAI announced an expansion of their partnership on Thursday, with Uber telling TechCrunch that its entire global workforce of roughly 30,000 people will now use ChatGPT Work. ChatGPT Work was introduced in July as an enterprise-focused AI agent for corporate workflows. Uber first piloted the tool with 1,000 employees earlier this year across departments including finance, operations, and product; about 80% of early adopters were non-engineers, according to Sumanth Sukumar, Uber's VP of engineering. Employees used it for tasks such as analyzing complex operational data, localizing training materials for different markets and languages, and building personalized interactive dashboards. Sukumar said Uber's approach is to make powerful AI tools available while giving teams room to experiment, citing earlier "AI pods" that paired 30 AI engineers with teams for two weeks to automate key parts of their jobs. Uber did not disclose spending on the rollout, and Sukumar said the company will track how employees use the technology, the workflows they develop, and how it improves effectiveness, then use those outcomes to guide AI deployment across the business. OpenAI worked closely with Uber on integrating the chatbot. The move reflects OpenAI's rapid push to scale its enterprise business amid competition with Anthropic.
