Anthropic’s IPO filing reveals its strategy for keeping enterprise customers hooked
Summary
Anthropic’s S-1 filing with the SEC reveals a cross-product ecosystem strategy aimed at making its enterprise customers stickier, similar to approaches used by Amazon and Uber. More than half of customers spending at least $100,000 annually now use both the Claude platform and a first-party app such as Claude Code or Cowork, up from about 30% at the end of last year. As of September 30, Anthropic had more than 11,900 customers spending at least $100,000, over 1,900 spending at least $1 million, and about 250 spending $10 million or more annually. The company reported net revenue retention of about 900% as customers expand usage across their organizations. Anthropic pitches Claude not as a static product but as frontier AI spanning models, the developer platform, and applications, with advances at any layer compounding across all three. The filing notes that the highest-spending 5% of Claude Enterprise customers using Claude Code spent about 20 times as much per month as the average enterprise user who did not use the coding tool. Anthropic invests in Applied AI teams and a venture with Blackstone called Ode with Anthropic to embed forward-deployed engineers in businesses. It also relies on joint go-to-market partnerships with AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure while maintaining direct customer contracts. The filing flags risks including cloud partners increasingly viewing Anthropic as a competitor, which could complicate securing compute, and customer concentration. Despite these risks, Anthropic reported revenue growth to $16.3 billion for the first half of 2026, up from $1.2 billion in the same period last year.
