Anthropic clamps down on Claude’s AI video game clones
Summary
Anthropic has updated the system prompt for Claude Code to stop the AI tool from being used to recreate existing video games, as reported by Tom’s Hardware. The change comes amid a surge of AI-made decompilations, recompilations, and ports in retro gaming. While users can still use Claude Code to make games, Anthropic does not want it used for direct clones. A screenshot posted on X allegedly showed two new sentences added to the prompt: “Do build original games, games in a genre, and games from the user’s own designs and assets. Don’t build a recreation of a specific existing game, even if it is named or called original.” Anthropic’s Addy Osmani did not confirm the exact wording but said the company updated the prompt in Claude Code on Opus 5.5 to steer it away from recreating someone else’s specific game because using Claude to infringe IP violates usage policy. Original games, genre games, and games built from users’ own designs and assets are meant to keep working. Anthropic will continue to iterate to strike the right balance and asked users to report cases where Claude turns down legitimate requests.
