Google takes Dreambeans to India in bid to bring AI-generated personal stories to the masses
Summary
Google has expanded its experimental AI app Dreambeans to India, marking its first international launch after debuting in the U.S. in June. The app, available on Android and iOS, uses data from connected Google services like Calendar, Gemini, Gmail, Photos, Search, and YouTube to proactively generate personalized, illustrated stories without requiring prompts. The India launch supports 13 local languages, including Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Bengali, alongside English. Google chose India due to strong user interest and high overlap of users across its services. Dreambeans has seen nearly 55,000 U.S. downloads since June, with a peak in September but an 84% drop in October. The app faces challenges in India, such as its inability to mix languages, which may limit appeal in a market where Hinglish is common. Privacy concerns are addressed by allowing users to control connected services, delete data, and avoid certain topics, though risks remain, such as generating upsetting memories. Google is also exploring ways to make the app more actionable beyond storytelling.
