Cursor is rolling out a new kind of agentic coding tool

Cursor has introduced 'Automations,' a new system designed to streamline the increasingly complex workflow of software engineers using agentic coding. As engineers manage numerous coding agents, attention becomes a key limitation. Automations allow agents to launch automatically based on triggers like new code commits, Slack messages, or timers, reducing the need for constant human prompting. This system enables more thorough code reviews, security audits, and incident response, with examples like Bugbot and integrations with PagerDuty. Cursor reports running hundreds of automations hourly, and despite competition from OpenAI and Anthropic, maintains a 25% market share among generative AI clients, with annual revenue exceeding $2 billion.
