The RAM shortage could last years
Summary
According to a report by Nikkei Asia, DRAM manufacturers are projected to meet only 60 percent of global demand by the end of 2027. Despite efforts by major players like Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron to expand fabrication capacity, production growth remains insufficient to match the current pace of demand. SK Group’s leadership has indicated that these supply constraints could potentially last until 2030.
Most new production capacity is currently being diverted toward high-bandwidth memory (HBM) required for AI data centers rather than consumer-grade RAM. This prioritization threatens to keep prices for consumer electronics, such as smartphones, laptops, and gaming devices, elevated for the foreseeable future, as overall production growth plans fall significantly short of the 12 percent annual increase required to stabilize the market.
