Anthropic is suing the Department of Defense

AI company Anthropic has filed a lawsuit against the US government in a California district court, challenging its designation as a supply-chain risk by the Trump administration. Anthropic alleges that the government retaliated against the company for establishing "red lines" against mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons, violating its First and Fifth Amendment rights. The lawsuit claims the government is attempting to destroy the company's economic value for adhering to its viewpoint on AI safety. This action follows a period where Anthropic faced threats and then the official designation, which is unusual for a US-headquartered company. While some clients like Microsoft are adjusting their contracts to avoid Pentagon involvement, the lawsuit notes that other agencies, including the General Services Administration, have terminated contracts, cutting off Anthropic's services to all three branches of the federal government.
