Musk says he’s building Terafab chip plant in Austin, Texas

Elon Musk announced plans to construct a Terafab chip fabrication plant in Austin, Texas, which will be jointly operated by Tesla and SpaceX. The facility aims to produce chips at scale to support robotics, artificial intelligence, and space-based data centers for Musk's various ventures. Musk emphasized the necessity of building the plant, stating, “We either build the Terafab or we don’t have the chips, and we need the chips, so we build the Terafab.” He projected the plant could eventually support up to 200 gigawatts of computing power annually on Earth and up to a terawatt in space. However, building a fabrication plant is a complex, multi-billion dollar endeavor, and Musk provided no timeline for when the facility might become operational or meet these production goals, especially given his history of over-promising on timelines and his lack of background in semiconductor production.
