The first American autonomous ground vehicles are fighting in Ukraine

US-based firm Forterra has deployed more than 100 autonomous Lancer ATVs in Ukraine over the past nine months to support military operations. These gas-powered vehicles, capable of carrying 750 kilograms, are utilized for logistics, supply transport, and casualty evacuations. While currently often teleoperated by Ukrainian soldiers due to the complexities of active combat and the need to protect the hardware, the deployment has provided invaluable data on electronic warfare, software updates, and maneuverability. Forterra is now working to advance its AI algorithms to improve autonomous decision-making in threat environments, as military experts continue to refine these tools for future defense needs.
