Google’s Demis Hassabis says it’s time for a global AI watchdog — led by the US

Google DeepMind cofounder Demis Hassabis has proposed the creation of a global AI regulatory body, modeled after organizations like the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, to oversee the development of frontier AI. He argues that the United States is best positioned to lead this initiative due to its technical and economic standing. The watchdog would be composed of independent experts and community representatives tasked with evaluating advanced AI models before release, with the power to enforce industry-wide slowdowns if models are deemed dangerous. Hassabis, who warns that Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) could arrive within years, is actively seeking support from the Trump administration and international officials to establish this framework by the end of the year.
