The Trump administration has launched the "Genesis Mission" grants, directing $5 billion toward AI-driven science projects while introducing a broader agenda to prioritize artificial intelligence, robotics, and nuclear energy over traditional life sciences. Promoted by science adviser Michael Kratsios, this new framework shifts federal support from academic institutions to individual researchers and heavily involves private tech companies. Researchers and scientists have strongly criticized the plan, arguing that it fundamentally misunderstands the nature of basic research by attempting to apply a venture capital startup model to public science, which could dismantle established scientific norms and cause long-term damage to the U.S. research ecosystem.
