‘Not healthy’ LLM use is more common than you think

YouTuber and science communicator Hank Green recently announced he is stepping back from content production following criticism over his use of AI, which he described as "not healthy." While Green maintained he used the technology strictly for finding research sources rather than writing scripts, the controversy highlights a significant gap in our understanding of AI's psychological impact. Experts note that LLMs are engineered for engagement and continuous interaction, much like social media platforms, creating a vast middle ground of compulsive or dependent use that falls short of severe psychiatric crisis. Early research suggests that offloading cognitive tasks to chatbots can weaken human skills such as critical thinking and memory. Given the massive scale of AI adoption, with hundreds of millions of active users, Green's public admission may reflect a widespread, yet largely unmeasured, psychological shift in how humans interact with technology.
