Apple could help you prove your iPhone photos aren’t deepfakes

Apple is reportedly developing a new iOS feature known as "Apple Reference Image" that embeds provenance metadata into photographs captured on an iPhone camera. Discovered in an iOS beta, the feature aims to help users prove that their images are authentic and not AI-generated deepfakes. When enabled, users can take pictures using a specific Reference mode, and authenticate them by sending raw image data and hardware identifiers to Apple's Private Cloud Compute servers. While similar to the C2PA Content Credentials standard used by other tech and camera companies, Apple's proprietary system may offer a more robust solution for verifying human-made works.
