Sony and UMG are suing Suno again

Sony and Universal Music Group have filed another lawsuit against AI music generator Suno, accusing the company of copyright infringement through its new v6 model. The labels allege that Suno engaged in "model laundering" by training v6 on outputs from its previous models, which were themselves trained on unlicensed music taken from YouTube and other sources. In their complaint, the labels argue that training a "new" model on outputs of an infringing model does not eliminate the infringement but merely launders it, passing copyrighted content through successive model generations. Sony and UMG are among the few major music labels that did not sign a licensing agreement with Suno. The complaint also alleges that Suno used a technique called distillation to train v6 to replicate results from its earlier "teacher" models built on infringing data, meaning that even without direct training on the labels' recordings, v6 still benefits from and is informed by Suno's retained unauthorized copies.
