ChatGPT for teens: OpenAI launches new age-appropriate bot. Here’s what parents should know

OpenAI is introducing a specialized version of ChatGPT tailored for teenagers aged 13 to 17, designed to address growing concerns about young people using artificial intelligence. Launching on Tuesday, the new tool incorporates heightened safety controls that block content related to self-harm, suicide, and romantic or sexual interactions. It also prevents the chatbot from claiming personal feelings or consciousness to mitigate the risk of emotional overreliance.

In addition to safety boundaries, the teen-focused chatbot includes educational features intended to help students comprehend their coursework rather than simply generating finished essays. OpenAI relies on age-estimation techniques to automatically place minors into the teen version, while optional parental controls allow guardians to set "quiet hours" and receive limited safety alerts in high-risk scenarios.
