NYC bans AI use for students until they reach high school

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced a one-year moratorium on AI use in classrooms for students in grades 2-K through eighth grade, effective for the 2026-2027 school year. The policy, introduced by the Department of Education, prohibits teachers from using AI for grading and bans students from using the technology until high school, with specific restrictions on chatbots for companionship. The ban is part of broader efforts to limit digital device use, including a ban on individual screens until third grade and recommended screen time limits. High school students will be allowed to use AI only in specific instances and will receive AI literacy classes. A limited pilot program for AI education tools will be conducted in a small number of high school classrooms. This policy is considered one of the most restrictive in the US, following similar measures in countries like Norway and Sweden.
