He warns that AI is already escaping human control and argues the legislation is necessary to prevent existential risk.

In response, AI podcaster Dwarkesh Patel, whose own descriptions of AI agents Sanders cited, argues that a pause at this moment, without a clear and strategic purpose, could paradoxically increase the risk of an AI takeover. Patel contends that a pause might only make sense if its goal is to ensure AI systems are robustly aligned and monitored before they become capable of triggering an intelligence explosion. He warns that a global halt is difficult to enforce and that humanity may have only one chance to coordinate effectively. The core disagreement is over the timing and efficacy of intervention.
