China’s intelligence chief warns of risks from AI in hands of ‘hostile forces’

China’s State Security Minister Chen Yixin has issued a stark warning about the rising national security risks posed by artificial intelligence. He stated that AI has become a new arena for major power strategic rivalry and called for robust risk prevention frameworks and stronger global governance. Chen specifically highlighted that AI could be leveraged by 'hostile forces' to generate rumors and mass-produce harmful information, posing a systemic threat to ideological security. He also warned of serious risks to critical information infrastructure, noting that next-generation AI models could lower the technical threshold and cost of cyberattacks. The call comes as China seeks a leading role in global AI governance, a stance underscored by President Xi Jinping's recent proposal for an AI-powered initiative at the Brics summit.
