Microsoft: Anthropic Claude remains available to customers except the Defense Department

Microsoft has assured customers that Anthropic's Claude models will remain accessible through its platforms, such as M365 and GitHub, even after the Trump Administration's Department of Defense designated Anthropic as a supply chain risk. This designation arose because Anthropic refused to grant the DoD unrestricted access to its technology for uses like mass surveillance and autonomous weapons. The designation typically bars the Pentagon from using the company's products and requires contractors to certify they do not use Anthropic models. However, Microsoft's legal review concluded that Claude can still be offered to all customers except the Department of Defense itself. This aligns with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's statement that the designation only applies to the use of Claude directly under contracts with the Department of War, not all customer usage.
