Employees across OpenAI and Google support Anthropic’s lawsuit against the Pentagon

Anthropic filed a lawsuit against the Department of Defense after being designated a supply chain risk for maintaining red lines against domestic mass surveillance and fully autonomous weapons use of its AI technology. Following this, nearly 40 employees from OpenAI and Google, including Google's chief scientist Jeff Dean, filed an amicus brief supporting Anthropic's suit, arguing the designation is improper retaliation that harms the public interest. The brief emphasizes that Anthropic's concerns regarding AI-powered mass domestic surveillance creating a unified surveillance apparatus, and the unreliability and ethical risks of lethal autonomous weapons systems without human oversight, are valid and require guardrails. The signatories, identifying as engineers and researchers, stressed they submitted the brief in their individual capacities, united by the conviction that frontier AI systems pose significant risks when deployed for these specific military or surveillance applications without proper oversight.
