OpenAI and Google employees rush to Anthropic’s defense in DOD lawsuit

More than 30 employees from OpenAI and Google DeepMind filed an amicus brief supporting Anthropic's lawsuit against the U.S. Defense Department (DOD). The DOD had labeled Anthropic a supply chain risk after the AI firm refused to allow the use of its technology for mass surveillance or autonomous weapons, arguing the DOD could simply cancel the contract if dissatisfied. The employees argued the designation was an improper use of power that could harm U.S. competitiveness and chill open deliberation on AI risks. The brief also affirmed that Anthropic's imposed technical restrictions are critical safeguards against misuse in the absence of public AI governance laws.
