Amazon wins court order to block Perplexity's AI shopping agent

Amazon has won a temporary court order against Perplexity, preventing its AI-powered shopping agent, Comet, from accessing Amazon's website. Amazon sued Perplexity in November, alleging the startup scraped its website without permission and concealed its AI agents. Judge Maxine Chesney ruled that Amazon presented “strong evidence” of unauthorized access and that Amazon incurred costs exceeding $5,000 to block Comet. Perplexity views the lawsuit as a “bully tactic” and intends to fight for users’ right to choose AI tools. Amazon argues Perplexity’s agents pose security risks to customer data and disrupt its advertising business, requiring costly system adaptations. The ruling includes a week-long stay for Perplexity to appeal.
