Canva’s new editing tool adds layers to AI-generated designs
Summary
Canva has introduced Magic Layers, a new feature now in public beta in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia, designed to transform flat images, including those created by AI, into fully editable designs with individual layers for objects, text, and graphics.
According to Canva's chief product officer, Cameron Adams, this tool allows users to edit existing designs without needing to start over or rely solely on reprompting AI for minor adjustments. While currently supporting single-page PNG or JPEG files, the feature is particularly aimed at enhancing the usability of Canva's generative AI outputs.
This capability sets Canva apart from competitors like Adobe, whose generative AI tools typically add new elements to separate layers but do not automatically deconstruct an entire existing image into editable layers. The introduction of Magic Layers offers creators greater manual control over flat images, though it may also complicate the ability to distinguish AI-generated work from traditionally created designs.
