AI decision review system being trialled in Darwin women's division one cricket competition
Summary
Darwin's premier women's cricket league has become the first Australian grade competition to implement an artificial intelligence (AI) umpire review system. During the 2026 season, players in the division one competition can challenge leg before wicket (LBW) decisions using the Fulltrack AI system. This technology, co-founded by Arjun Verma, utilizes a chest-mounted high-resolution camera to track ball trajectory and determine if it would have hit the stumps. While not as accurate as multi-camera international systems, it offers a cost-effective solution for local leagues. The system is being trialled for 12 months, with each division one team receiving two challenges per innings. Players like PINT captain Amy Yates see value in the system for its potential to overturn incorrect decisions. Coaches, such as Will Glover, have found the data provided by the platform beneficial for performance analysis. NT Cricket aims to eliminate perceptions of bias and reduce arguments, especially in self-umpired games, and hopes the technology will also attract new umpires by alleviating the pressure of making incorrect calls. Cricket Australia and other interstate leagues are closely monitoring this trial.
