Congress’s favorite AI tool? ChatGPT

OpenAI's ChatGPT has emerged as the dominant artificial intelligence tool used by the U.S. Congress, capturing approximately 90% of total congressional spending on AI tools according to House disbursement records. Out of at least $113,740 spent on AI, Congress allocated around $100,580 to ChatGPT across 798 transactions, while Anthropic’s Claude followed in second place with $13,160. Additionally, Democratic offices spent roughly three times more on AI purchases than Republican offices. Congressional staffers utilize these tools for various tasks, including drafting memos, summarizing legislation, responding to constituents, and sorting through policy research.
