AI could force 11 million US workers into new careers by 2035

A McKinsey Global Institute report estimates that approximately 11 million U.S. workers—about 6.5% of the current labor force—may need to switch to entirely different occupations by 2035 due to automation and AI adoption. The report predicts that automation could reduce labor demand by 36 million jobs, while AI-related growth and the broader economy could generate 40 million new jobs over the same period, potentially creating more jobs than it eliminates. About 25 million of the 36 million affected workers are expected to remain in their current roles as industry growth offsets automation's impact, but the remaining 11 million will likely need to change occupations entirely, making workforce mobility the key challenge of the next decade. The report notes that while the U.S. will likely have more jobs available in 2035 than today due to an aging population and slower immigration, this technological shift may require the largest and most sustained workforce transformation in U.S. history. This comes amid an already sluggish labor market characterized by a "low-hire, low-fire" environment, with job openings at a five-month low, voluntary quits near a six-year low, and layoffs declining for the second consecutive month.
