Almost half of all new Steam games use AI now

Dexerto
Nearly half of all new Steam games released in October 2026 disclosed using AI-generated content, a sharp rise from 1.7% in early 2024.

Summary

An analysis of over 63,000 Steam games released since January 2024 found that 49.9% of new releases in October 2026 disclosed the use of AI-generated content, nearly double the 26.4% from the same month a year earlier. Valve introduced mandatory AI disclosures in January 2024, when only 1.7% of new games carried such a disclosure. The share rose to 13.2% across 2024, 24% in 2025, and 40.1% so far in 2026. AI use is more common among smaller games—47% of 2026 titles with fewer than 10 reviews disclosed AI, versus 14% of those with at least 1,000 reviews. Prolific developers were also more likely to disclose, with 68% of games from studios releasing 10 or more titles in 2026 reporting AI use. AI-generated artwork was the most common application at 63%, followed by text and translations (30%), store and marketing materials (26%), music (21%), and code (16%); AI voices appeared in 7% and in-game AI content in 3%. Because disclosures are self-reported, the true share of games using AI may be higher. Valve also revised its disclosure rules in January 2026 to focus on player-visible or audible AI content rather than behind-the-scenes tools.
