Meta acquires AI coding startup Conductor
Summary
Meta has acquired Conductor, an AI coding startup founded in 2024 that launched its core product last summer. Conductor's platform allows users to deploy multiple AI agents into parallel workspaces to help software engineers collaborate on separate, compartmentalized parts of a project; the agents themselves come from major labs like Anthropic and OpenAI rather than being developed in-house. The news was first reported by Axios, and Conductor founder and CEO Charlie Holtz announced it on the company blog and on X, expressing enthusiasm about working with Meta's chief AI officer Alexandr Wang and Nat Friedman, head of product at Meta's Superintelligence Labs. Meta confirmed the acquisition to TechCrunch but declined to provide further details. Holtz said Conductor's core features will continue to work as before until early next year, but the company's cloud service will shut down on November 20, after which user cloud data will be deleted. The acquisition is part of Meta's broader push to catch up in AI, following the launch of its own coding agent Muse Code in August and its Muse agents surpassing 10 million users, as well as other AI-related acquisitions over the past year.
