How we’re reimagining Maps with Gemini

Google Maps is integrating Gemini models to launch conversational search via Ask Maps and a visually overhauled Immersive Navigation feature.

Summary

Google Maps is fundamentally changing through the integration of Gemini models, introducing two major updates: Ask Maps and Immersive Navigation. Ask Maps is a new conversational experience allowing users to ask complex, real-world questions—like finding a public tennis court with lights—and receive personalized recommendations based on fresh map data and user preferences. This feature is rolling out in the U.S. and India on Android and iOS. The second major update is Immersive Navigation, the biggest navigation overhaul in over a decade, which features redesigned 3D visuals, intuitive guidance highlighting lanes and traffic lights, and natural voice prompts. Gemini models help analyze imagery to provide accurate spatial understanding. Furthermore, Maps now shows tradeoffs for alternate routes (e.g., tolls vs. traffic) and offers helpful arrival guidance, including Street View previews and parking recommendations.
