Barclays scales Claude to upgrade operations and improve client experience
Summary
Barclays, the British universal bank, is expanding its strategic collaboration with Anthropic to integrate Claude across its global operations, aiming to accelerate software development, modernize legacy systems, and improve operational efficiency. The bank expects Claude Code adoption to reach 50% of its developer population by the end of 2026, rising to a majority of software engineers in 2027.
One concrete implementation is Barclays' Colleague Knowledge Assistant, powered by Claude through retrieval-augmented generation, which has been live since 2025 and is used by more than 16,000 colleagues to support over 20 million UK retail customers, handling over one million searches to date. Within the Global Markets business, Claude models process approximately 120,000 emails each day by classifying, enriching, and routing incoming client enquiries, reducing manual handling and improving response efficiency.
Leadership from both organizations emphasized the importance of responsible AI deployment. Anne Marie Darling, Group Co-Chief Operating Officer at Barclays, stressed transforming how work gets done to focus expertise on complex problems, while Craig Bright highlighted AI as an increasingly agentic capability embedded in how Barclays builds, tests, secures, and operates technology. Paul Smith, Chief Commercial Officer at Anthropic, noted that Barclays' work represents a significant milestone in the UK. The partnership is built on robust governance, security controls, and human oversight to ensure safe and effective scaling of AI across one of the world's largest financial institutions.
