A survey shows 60% of UK working-age adults fear AI will take many jobs, but only 22% worry about their own job.

Summary

A new analysis by the Resolution Foundation of the latest British Social Attitudes survey reveals that 60% of working-age adults in the UK are worried that digital technologies, including AI, will take over many jobs currently done by humans, but only 22% of workers are concerned that their own job is at risk. The analysis also shows a significant decline in job satisfaction over the past decade, from 81% to 74%, the lowest recorded. Workers report reduced willingness to work harder than required (from 69% to 55%), fewer interesting jobs (74% to 63%), and fewer opportunities for advancement (35% to 26%). Additionally, while more workers value high income (67% to 78%) and flexible hours (46% to 61%), only 23% feel their job provides a high income and 31% can decide their own hours. Hannah Slaughter, Principal Economist at the Resolution Foundation, notes that workers increasingly want flexibility, independence, and financial security, but many feel these expectations are unmet, leading to a "dissatisfaction drain" that is bad for workers and also detrimental to productivity and labour supply.
