Using AI makes people less likely to admit they don't know something

Researchers from French and Italian universities found that access to AI advice reduces the human tendency to acknowledge when they do not know an answer. In experiments using questions likely to trigger AI hallucinations, participants with AI access were far less likely to admit ignorance and far more likely to accept incorrect answers as truth. The study revealed that even when users had access to flawed AI, their confidence in their answers surged, while their actual accuracy dropped significantly compared to baseline control groups, highlighting a concerning erosion of critical thinking.
