Adobe’s ‘natural look’ camera app embraces generative AI

Adobe is integrating generative AI capabilities into its experimental Indigo camera app, which was originally designed to provide an SLR-like "natural look" for iPhone users. Through the new "AI Playground" suite, users can access features such as Styles for preset effects, Object Editing for removing distractions, Photo Guidance for reshoot suggestions, and Custom Edit for detailed prompting.

Interestingly, Adobe is currently utilizing Google’s Nano Banana AI model for these updates rather than its own Firefly models. This experimental rollout is being tested with a small percentage of users, with the potential for a future paid version if the features prove popular. The app remains focused on computational photography, offering manual controls like ISO and shutter speed to appeal to photography enthusiasts.

Regarding AI transparency, Adobe is working to implement C2PA Content Credentials and notes that the current model uses Google’s invisible SynthID watermark. Marc Levoy, an Adobe fellow, emphasized that while technology evolves, the responsibility for how images are presented remains with the user.
